Senior Citizen – Cozy Christmas Gift Idea

Heated mattress pads can be an economical way to keep warm. Gentle heat generated by mattress pads eases tension in addition to being energy efficient. The utilization of Far Infrared heating further rejuvenates the body. Heated mattress pads are perhaps most beneficial to the elderly as they are greatly affected by the cold of winter. Safety factor concerns also come into play when considering electric mattress pads. Oftentimes electric heated blankets are not recommended for use with electric adjustable beds, waterbeds, or blowup airbeds yet the warnings are ignored. Like all electric appliances, a control may not work properly, perhaps the blanket becomes bunched up causing an overheated condition, or a heater wire might break. Therefore, it is foolish to allow anyone who is helpless, paralyzed, insensitive to heat, or incapable of understanding the control’s operation to use these appliances. Did you know that heaters remove ambient moisture, which in turn dries out your skin? As we age, the...

Ten Minutes to Feeling Good Every Day

Ten Minutes to Feeling Good Every Day

Start the Day off Right – Ten Minutes to Feeling Good Every Day As the days begin to grow shorter and shorter, it’s likely you’re finding your to-do list has reached a length of world-record length proportions. With so much on your plate, it is easy to forget to take care of yourself. Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, recommends you take at least 10 minutes each morning and dedicate them to doing something good for yourself. She’s developed several simple and easy tips that can boost your mood and productivity before even stepping out the door. “Ten minutes may not seem like it will make a difference, but it’s plenty of time to get your day started off right,” says Bonci. “It’s important to remember that living a healthy lifestyle is a life-long commitment – that doesn’t necessarily need to take a lot of your valuable time.” Confidence is Key: Say to yourself...

Skin Tone – Winter Sun Tanning

Beautifully tanned skin is desirable among young women; at least it used to be when I was young. During the summer months, sunbathing was commonly included in the daily skin regiment. The theory was to obtain a dark tan that would last through the cold winter months. Over the years, we have learned the damaging effects UV rays can have on the skin. Being of fair skin tone, I paid attention and fortunately heeded some of those warnings. Harmful Effects of Sunbathing The dangerous effects of sunbathing, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation oftentimes are classified as acute or chronic. The acute effects of exposure are both short-lived and reversible. These effects include mainly sunburn (erythema) and tanning (pigment darkening). Chronic effects of UV exposure are more serious and possibly even life threatening, including premature aging of the skin, suppression of the immune system, damage to the eyes, and skin cancer. Healthy Tanning Beds – Experts disagree Being a fair-skinned...

Omega-3 fatty acids – Balance those eggs!

omega 3 vitamins

What do you know about Omega fatty acids? Everyone talks about Omega-3s but what about Omega-6s, did you know eggs contain omega-6s? There is a relationship between the two, a balancing act if you will. According to the archives at positscience.com, in 2005, a study was published in the Archives of Neurology. The study revealed participants of normal aging who ate fish once a week slowed the decline of the thought process by 10%. An earlier study in the same journal found people 65 or older who ate fish once a week or more had a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer disease compared to those who did not eat fish. A number of scientists credit the Omega-3 fatty acids for the positive results. While the studies are not conclusive, they do strongly suggest a possible connection. I have heard Omega-3s perform many health “miracles” in people. WebMd reports, some experts say Omega-3s encourage the production of inflammation controlling body chemicals of...

GPS Tracking & Family Safety

What comes to mind when someone says GPS? The most common responses are directions or coordinates, tracking business autos and equipment, and cell phone tracking. Business owners benefit greatly with the use of GPS locating systems. Tracking for employee safety and productivity are easily achieved with a gps tracker installed. Some systems even offer panic buttons and alerts should a tracker leave a pre-defined area or exceed speed limits. Businesses can track assets from a central location, and check the whereabouts from any smart phone. Of course, cell phone tracking is a common and important asset for police, emergency responders, and even employers can use existing BlackBerry or Smart Phones to track employee locations. Were you aware of personal GPS locators and their availability? My guess is most people will answer no to that question. This is the perfect solution for tracking an elderly person. How many times do we hear about a senior being lost or forgetting where...

Cleansing and Weight Loss, oh sure

OMG what is all the hype on colon-cleansing pills and weight loss? I mean does anyone read about this stuff before trying it. Ever hear the old saying, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is?” Well, that probably applies to these pills too. I read an interesting article on Wed MD about the author and infomercial king who wrote “The Weight Loss Cure They Don’t Want You to Know About”. Seems the FDA is following through on this one. They stepped up and slammed him for false advertising along with alleged junk science claims. Of course the author, who has NO medical, nutrition, or dietary credentials claimed the professionals were suppressing the truth. This is a guy who has had some trouble with the law and a larceny conviction to boot! He is an executive and a good salesperson but hardly reputable. Roberta Anding, MS, RD, the spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association pointed out...
