Family Caregiver Mobility Solutions

Family Caregiver Mobility Solutions

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine. After looking into the NMEDA, a non profit association that advocates safe, reliable vehicles and modifications for those with special mobility needs, I was more than pleased to blog about them. After all, it seems we (hubby and I) are the chosen family caregivers. Whenever a family member needs a caregiver, they come to our house. In 2008, my mother in law recovered at our house for some time. Just before she was released from the nursing home, I remember her saying, “I’m coming to your house of course, where else would I choose to go right? Besides, you cook!” Maybe it’s our way of life or my home cooked meals, who knows. I’m happy and honored to be the chosen one. My father just recently moved in with hubby and me. He has slowed down quite a bit the last year...

Fatal Falls: Protect Your Parents

Fatal Falls: Protect Your Parents

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Medical Guardian. All opinions are 100% mine. The National Safety Council states, “Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults 73 and older and the second leading cause of death from ages 60-72.” Clear cut statement, I’m just sayin”. Medical Alert systems provide 24/7 Round The Clock UL approved live emergency response monitoring. I am certain you have heard all the tag lines and jokes surrounding them. Trust me this is no joking matter. My mother in law fell in July 2008.  Being elderly, heavy, and ailing, she lay on the floor with her dog at her side in excess of 12 hours. Her son arrived to find his mother in shock, shaking violently on the living room carpet. Understand, she did not live alone even though she thought she was able. Mom was to be alone for just that evening.  Needing a drink of...

Phentermine or Phentirmene – weight loss miracles?

Phentermine or Phentirmene – weight loss miracles?

According to National Center for Biotechnology Information, Phentermine is used, in combination with diet and exercise, to aide in weight loss. It is prescribed by a physician and works by decreasing your appetite. This is an amphetamine and can become habit forming. It is particularly important to note and discuss with your doctor the complications that could arise when taking this medication in combination with the following: fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), guanethidine, insulin, MAO inhibitors , paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and vitamins. One would think this unnecessary, a doctor would not already know what medications their patient was taking right? Wrong. I had one too many experiences with my parents where their doctor did not have a complete list of the current prescribed meds, no kidding. Bring a list just to be safe. Now, Phentermine should not be confused with Phentirmene. Evidently, the latter is an over the counter weight loss aide asserting “no side...

Diets that work… for SEO

Diets that work… for SEO

While answering a question on myLot this afternoon I got to thinking about dieting and the struggles overweight people suffer. This particular myLot user wanted to know the proper response to a skinny person that complains they are fat. Of course, this woman had been quite overweight some years ago, a size 20 to be exact. After the skinny woman had finished her rant about being fat, this myLot user replied, “Honey, You’re talking to a fat girl and I have no sympathy for you!” This woman, who generally poses a quite pleasant, likable disposition, has been hard-bitten by her weight journey. In her opinion, the skinny woman gaining 25 lbs over four years had no reason to complain. Being a huge “search for it online” person, I did just that. “OK Google, what you got for diets that work?”  A Google search for the phrase “diets that work” returns about 9,710,000 results in 0.35 seconds. With that bitter,...

Pets improve mental and physical health

Pets improve mental and physical health

Life has been a roller coaster of emotion these last few months. My elderly father moved in with us last month and my youngest son moved out this month. He decided to continue his studies in the UK. Yep, he left the country! Hubby and I are very happy for him and very much going to miss him these next two years. He flew out on Saturday; we had a very emotional weekend indeed. Of course, he could not take his friend Connor so we acquired a grand-puppy. It is a good thing too because not only is Connor a symbol of our son, he has become Dad’s pal. Connor is a Beagle/Rottweiler mix, very lovable, and always wagging his tail. He trots out to greet Dad in the morning and sits by his chair when he is watching TV. The dog makes my Dad smile, says he wishes he had some of what powers that tail! Fewer Allergies,...

Rogaine, is it right for you?

Rogaine, is it right for you?

I remember when Rogaine was first being advertised about twenty years ago, several friends were very excited to test it out. Engaging in lengthy conversations on the subject with both men and women, I learned the emotions associated with balding are very similar to having a mild disability or disfigurement. That somehow sounds silly, I know.  The onset of balding is the time these emotions are strongest, from what I was told. The self-consciousness is even more pronounced with men and women who begin to loose hair at an earlier than normal age. It was really rather sad to hear how this hair loss affected their lives. While Rogaine has been approved by the FDA and testing has proven it to promote hair growth, it does not reverse hereditary pattern baldness. What it does do is regrow hair for those who have other types of hereditary hair loss. Here are two excerpts from reputable sources concerning, Minoxidil, the active...

Stress and hair loss

Everyone loses approximately 100 hairs per day, out of the 100,000 contained by the average scalp. A few contributing factors are lifestyle, styling, and the infamous aging process. Other common causes of hair loss include Genetic hair loss, age, gender, and hormones. Stress and Hair Loss: It is true that stress can cause hair loss. Extreme physical or emotional stress, for instance stress associated with injury, illness, or surgery, can cause one of two types of hair loss: The most common type, Telogen Effluvium is the less severe type of hair loss where the hair stops growing and lies dormant, only to fall out 2 or 3 months later. It generally grows back within 6 to 9 months. Alopecia Areata is the second type and involves a white blood cell attack on the hair follicles. Similarly, the hair also falls out within weeks and usually in patches. The main difference is the entire scalp and even body hair can...
