Women Designers – Home Furnishing Fashion Setters

Trestle Light - Kitchen Light

The word designer is immediately associated with fashion in my mind. Perhaps it is a womanly instinct to correlate designer with  clothing however, did you ever stop and consider who designed the essential furnishings in your home? While furniture collections are most commonly related to their designers, who designed the chandeliers, the bathroom lights, or the ceiling fans? These designers induce the popular home decor trends or, should I say, fashions.   Karyl Pierce Paxton is a much-admired national designer of home products. A talented Texan who studied art and design in both Mississippi and New York, Ms. Paxton returned to Mississippi upon completing her studies. In 1991 Pierce Paxton Design Studio was born. She created award-winning commercial and residential interiors and later added hand painted signature furniture and lighting. To pace with the growing popularity of her home furnishings, Karyl moved her studio to New Orleans. There additional artists and craftsmen were taken on to produce her line. Influenced...

Gift Idea – Flat Panel TV Stand

Gift Idea – Flat Panel TV Stand

If I only knew then what I know now! Electronics that operate constantly need air circulation and this knowledge would have been most helpful upon purchasing our first theatre system. Geez, installing a home sound system involves a huge amount of wiring connections. Deciphering the in and out wiring in conjunction with the order of connection was complicated. In fact, the install resulted in an all day ordeal for me, the house electronics installer. I was dreading switching cable providers for that single reason. Anyway, I had no idea just how much heat a home theatre system could produce. The TV stand I bought is enclosed. Fail! Had I known the intensity of heat associated with a theater such as ours, the style of the TV stand would have been completely open. Given the opportunity to rewind the electronic tape of home theaters, one of these tv stands would be the focal point of our family room. The features...

DIY – Romantic Outdoor Patios

DIY – Romantic Outdoor Patios

With proper planning, outdoor lighting can be used to create an ambiance of romance while maintaining the functional areas of the patio. Installing separate circuits for the various areas of the outdoor patio as well as dimmer switches and multi-directional lighting facilitates the functionality of a single outdoor area. By highlighting the styles and shapes of gardens, pools, and outdoor decor a functional patio is easily transformed into a romantic getaway locale. Romantic outdoor ambiance is best achieved through light fixture styles and placement. One way to obtain a romantic feel is to enhance fountains or tabletop waterfalls by installing globe and/or goose neck reflective lighting fixtures. Reflections from light cascading downward combined with the flowing sounds of water fashions a dreamy sensation. Direct lighting from an adjacent area can cast an enchanting reflection on a pool by using typical wall mounted outdoor spot lights. Arrange a sitting area at the opposite end or the “lesser lit area” to...

Bathroom Makeover – DIY with Glidden

Bathroom Makeover – DIY with Glidden

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Glidden. All opinions are 100% mine. After deciding on the new bathroom light and a design plan, I received this Glidden opportunity… Perhaps this was a bathroom makeover omen. On the other hand, maybe it was a blessing on my decision to DIY. Either way I am excited! We frequently use Glidden Paints and are very happy with their products. In addition, Home Depot is only a mile away and hubby has an account there. With thirty days to pay, I can stretch the bathroom makeover budget even further. As I said in my previous post, the bathroom design plan is to sponge paint with yellow and white over the blue base to vanity height. The blue paint is similar to Steele Blue and a Glidden product I might add. Recommend on Facebook Share on FriendFeed Buzz it up Share on Linkedin share via Reddit Share with Stumblers...

Fireplaces in July?

Fireplaces in July?

Should I really be blogging about fireplaces and mantles in July? Oh c’mon others do Christmas in July so why not fireplaces? Besides that, we are past the halfway mark for 2010. Before you know it, New Year’s Eve will be here again! Mantles direct has some beautiful fireplace mantles on display. My hubby would really love to have a fireplace, even if we do live in Florida! He has talked about building a fireplace in the family room for several years now. Our neighbors have one, ceiling to floor made of real stone and it is beautiful. Yes, they did use it during the winter months this year. Seems the weather patterns are changing quite a bit. I was surprised when we made it through April without using the air conditioner.  Getting back to those mantle pieces, not only does Mantles Direct supply single shelf mantle pieces, they also offer outdoor fireplaces, direct-vent gas fireplaces, ventless gel fireplaces,...
