Older Than Dirt Quiz | Midlife Nostalgia Makes You Smile

Older Than Dirt Quiz | Midlife Nostalgia Makes You Smile

This was sent to me via email from an 85-year-old woman. It is amazing to me how she uses a computer and email. Can you even wrap your head around the technology advancements this woman has experienced? The iPhone, iPad, Cable Television, or Google News was nonexistent. For that matter, even computers were a science fiction sort of thing. OMG!   Entertainment  We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 16. – -  It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.  Communication I never had a telephone in my room. – - The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial,...

Puppies or Babies | An Epic Battle of Cuteness

Puppies or Babies | An Epic Battle of Cuteness

This post brought to you by Puppies vs. Babies. All opinions are 100% mine. Animal Planet is ready to rumble… Puppies versus Babies! Oh my gosh this is too funny. Reminds me of the America’s Funniest Home Video TV show our family used to enjoy so much. That’s why I agreed to sponsor this post. Fond recollections of family time are priceless and need to be emphasized. The lead in for this TV show is brilliant, both species of offspring seem to instantly create a warm, fuzzy feeling. Aaawww look how cute, you have heard it said and probably said something similar as well. It is a natural reaction for baby lovers regardless of the species. Puppies versus Babies airs Oct 29th and continues through November. In this epic battle of cute, only one can emerge victorious… puppies or babies and kittens too! The promo video exclaims, “Get ready for the ultimate clash of cute!” Check out the Puppies vs....

Midlife Reminiscing – Boys Scouts of America

Midlife Reminiscing – Boys Scouts of America

This post brought to you by Boy Scouts of America. All opinions are 100% mine. The Boys Scouts of America promote and teach the qualities needed to become men with integrity. A scout is defined as honest, loyal, kind, helpful, obedient, cheerful, brave, and reverent among other quality traits. My hubby came from a family of scouts. Not only were he and his brother scouts but his father a scout leader and cousin accomplished Eagle Scout stature! He attributes much of what he learned about “being a male” to his Boy Scout days. After questioning hubby at length, I learned that not much has changed since he participated in scouting. Hubby proudly shared his troop memories. Each month an area of learning was chosen by the leader that related to earning merit badges, which is similar to the current meeting structure. Today, a scout can earn more than 100 merit badges. His weekly meetings consisted of a learning time,...

Upromise College Rewards Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Upromise College Rewards Celebrates 10th Anniversary

This post brought to you by UPromise. All opinions are 100% mine. Midlife has brought about a new lifestyle, qualifying me for The Sandwich Generation inclusion. Yes, I am included in the ever-growing generation who simultaneously care for parents and children. This cultural shift in combination with the horrible economy nearly made college unattainable for my youngest son, which brings me to share a bit about Upromise. Upromise is a reward program that can help parents pay for college. This month Upromise is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in a big way! Hard to believe I have been a member for ten years. Upromise Dream Sweepstakes To celebrate the Upromise 10th anniversary they are giving away $20,000 to users who share their story. Parents can participate in the sweepstakes by sharing how they supported a child’s dream! Users can vote on their favorite stories by “liking” them. Upromise is giving 10 winners $1000.00 and a grand prizewinner $10,000.00. With nothing...

Is the Social Media Landscape Influencing your Family?

Is the Social Media Landscape Influencing your Family?

Social media seems to be just about everywhere these days. Whereas people used to stand next to their friends and chat with them, now they’re deciding how many of the ten different bands on Myspace they want to allow to friend them. And how long has it been since people sent their messages through a phone, using that antique thing people used to call “their voice?” These are just the possible musings of people who predate the current fixation with social media and excessive reliance on technology. Let’s take a look at some of the new realities that social media is imposing on family life. Consider how about only ten years or so ago, kids used to beg their parents for cell phones. Do not feel old if you can remember when they used to beg for pagers – that was only 20 years ago. But now, it seems like the latest smart phone grows out of a child’s...

10 Eat Your Peas and Thank You Tips

10 Eat Your Peas and Thank You Tips

When Veggies = I don’t like it mom! What kids do not know will truly help them! I was fortunate to have two boys who loved veggies. Perhaps that was the result of feeding them every veggie imaginable as soon as table food was appropriate. As the boys became social, our house then became “the neighborhood hang-out”. As such, frequent dinner guests resulted along with lots of experience with veggie haters. As I recall the most common complaint was canned vegetables. On more than one occasion, different children and teens told me fresh steamed vegetables tasted nothing like the canned vegetables their family ate. Outside of beans, fresh or frozen vegetables were the only type I served. While I’m no child professional these tips and tricks helped to entice kids to each veggies. Require them to eat new vegetables Offer one tablespoon- 1)      With explanation, “You have to eat one spoonful. If you like these as much as I do...
