Sweet Caroline | Good Times Never Seemed So Good

Sweet Caroline | Good Times Never Seemed So Good

The AP reported the good times never seemed so good for Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond will be honored with Broadway singer Barbara Cook, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and actress Meryl Streep for their contributions to American culture through the arts. I smiled fondly reading the article. Carolyn would have been ecstatic about the news! She was the biggest Neil Diamond fan I ever knew. My mother in law – Carolyn – simply adored Neil Diamond. In fact, back in 2008 when she found out Neil was performing in Tampa, she pitched an “I’ll buy, you fly” deal to me. You see, traffic and the never-ending roadwork in Florida make driving  for seniors difficult and frightening. There was simply no way I would refuse this dear 70 year old woman the opportunity. It was early spring when we bought the tickets. Level one directly across from the stage about 10 rows up were the best tickets I could get. She...

Follow Friday|40 and Over Top Midlife Blogs #7

Today would have been my mother’s 80th birthday. She passed away in 1999, re-occurring breast cancer. It’s hard to imagine that twelve years have passed. Reaching midlife has not changed how much I miss her nor has the empty space in my life dissipated. My sister claims even now I was forever changed by the whole ordeal surrounding her death. My mother was a fabulous cook, avid golfer, and a superb mother. In fact, she was a mom to more than only her natural children. Plenty of friends and family were waiting to occupy our vacant rooms. Dad compared this to a boarding house and often wondered who would be moving in next. Mom would simply smile. Anyone who knew my mother would speak first of the Italian meals she prepared, followed by her funny laugh that was extremely contagious. You know, one of those genuine happy and giggly kinds of laughs. According to the hubby, Mom’s laugh was...

Store Brand Infant Formulas Defeat Mead Johnson

Store Brand Infant Formulas Defeat Mead Johnson

This post brought to you by storebrandformula.com. All opinions are 100% mine. Store brand infant formulas won a major legal victory last month. A United States Circuit Court upheld a $13.5 million false advertising claim against Enfamil maker Mead Johnson. This decision affirms families will continue enjoying the savings of Store Brand formula without compromising nutritional values. PBM Products successfully argued that Enfamil’s advertisements of superiority to store brand formulas were false and misleading. The store brand formulas offer the same nutrients at the same levels as Enfamil.  Circuit Judge Andre Davis wrote. “PBM cannot fairly compete with Mead Johnson unless and until Mead Johnson stops infecting the marketplace with misleading advertising. ” This ruling was a win for families who rely on store brands as well. Scared tactics and misleading advertising could make the difference in parent’s ability to buy new clothing or other vital goods for their children. Name brand products can be as much as double...

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mothers Day

Carmella Marie is a beautiful name isn’t it. That is my mothers’ name. Can you believe she despised her name? Marie was ok but not the name Carmella. My intention was to name my second child after my mother and of course, she had absolutely forbidden it. God honored me with a son, solving the dilemma for us! According to Teresa Norman, author of A World of Baby Names, the origin of Carmella is “derived from the Hebrew and meaning “vineyard” or “orchard.” Mount Carmel is a mountain in northwestern Israel inhabited in early Christian times by a group of hermits who later became Carmelite monks in the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” Babynology.com supports this origin as well. They note that it Carmel was a beautiful place of which Solomon compared to the beauty of a bride. Several other sites agree the origin is Hebrew and the name means garden or vineyard and golden. The Biblical reference is...

Le Creuset, Girly Cookware?

Le Creuset, Girly Cookware?

Can Cast Iron Cookware be considered girly? I remember the first time cooking with my mother’s Le Creuset pot. It was a brick red Dutch oven and OMG sooo heavy. I asked mom why she chose such heavy pot… I said, “Oh my gosh they weigh a ton!” She said Le Creuset was known to be among the finest of pots and she treasured the deep color. She smiled and said something to the affect of, Yes Kath they are heavy but so beautiful, definitely made for a woman who loves to cook. You know, she went on, cast iron pots, pans, and skillets are called generation pans. I expect that one day you or your baby sister will be cooking with this pot, passing it on to your children as well.   Fast forward to 2011, my baby sister has that red Le Creuset pot. It is obvious to me now why my mother chose le creuset cookware....

Colon Cleansing – No Crap, Grandma was Right Again!

Did you know the idea of natural colon cleansing dates back to ancient Greece? Cleansing the colon, which is the large intestine, became popular in the 1920s and 1930s in the United States. At some point, the theories behind it lost support and it fell out of favor. As you may have noticed recently, colon cleansing has experienced rebirth by the use of teas, enzymes, and/or colon irrigation. Because researchers have devoted little study to colon cleansing plenty of questions remain such as, is colon-cleansing good for you? In addition, does anyone really need it? To a certain extent, medical judgment has yet to be finalized on the subject. What is natural colon cleansing anyway? WebMD states two main colon-cleansing methods.
