A Recipe For Longevity: 33 Of The Healthiest Foods On Earth

David H. Murdock is Chairman and owner of Dole Food Company, Inc., the world’s largest producer and marketer of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, packaged and frozen foods. Is it possible to live to 125 or maybe 150? It’s certainly a possibility, as discussed on Oprah Winfrey’s recent show on longevity. She visited me at my farm to learn how, at 86, I am enjoying the robust health, energy, and mental creativity of someone many decades younger. My secret: large quantities of fruit and vegetables, plus an hour of daily exercise. No pills, not even aspirin, and certainly no supplements ever enter my mouth — everything I need comes from my fish-vegetarian diet, which incorporates 30-40 different kinds of fruit and vegetables every week. Even though I am Chairman and Owner of Dole Food Company, I do most of my own grocery shopping, and even took Oprah on an impromptu trip to Costco, in a day that included bike riding, exercise in...

Fruits & Veggies—More Matters™

Fruits & Veggies—More Matters™ The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends adults consume 3.5 to 6.5 cups (7 to 13 servings) of fruits and vegetables daily and children eat 2 to 5 cups per day (4 to 10 servings) depending on their age. While research indicates that more than 50 percent of adult consumers know they need to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, more than 90 percent of all Americans do not eat the recommended amount. To meet the new dietary guidelines, most consumers will have to more than double the amount they currently consume. Closing the consumption gap requires a new national call-to-action, Fruits & Veggies—More Matters™, which will launch in March 2007. This new call for a healthier America is attainable and easy for people to understand. It is simply to eat more fruits and veggies at every eating occasion. Sensational Salad a Potluck Star

Sensational Salad a Potluck Star

Easy. Portable. Crowd-pleaser. Potluck recipes for a large gathering need to hit on all marks, but especially the pleasing part. Everyone should have a dish that’s a real winner, one we stake our reputation on, with a recipe everyone begs for. We all love to have a dish that’s a surefire hit, and I’m no exception. I’m known for my baking, and love to share my favorite dessert recipes. But I’ve got a few savory side dishes that are in my “most requested” file. Though I’m often asked to bring a home-baked dessert, I love to share some of my other offerings-thereby securing my reputation as an all-round great cook. This Oriental Ramen Salad hits the mark on many levels: * It’s crunchy with a creamy dressing. * The creamy dressing is made with fat-free evaporated milk, providing rich, creamy flavor but no fat. * The component parts can be made ahead, stored separately, and transported to the party,...

The Case for Real Food

The Case for Real Food More than just vitamins? (Tony Cenicola/The New York Times) Is there more to a carrot than beta carotene? Is lycopene the best we get from tomatoes? And when we heap our plates with salmon, are we serving up something other than omega-3s? For years the scientific community has viewed individual vitamins and nutrients as the best that food has to offer. Nutrition studies have isolated beta carotene, calcium, vitamin E and lycopene, among other nutrients, in order to study their health benefits in the body. Nutrition Tips for Healthy Holiday Living

Drink 64 ounces of water per day. Proper hydration helps metabolize fat. Resolve never to super size your food portions unless you want to super size your clothes. Eat with purpose: be sure to plate it so you can sit down and enjoy it. Eating out? Halve it, and get the rest to go. Eat the low-cal items on your plate first. Start with salads, veggies, and broth soups; eat meats and starches last. Get calories from foods you chew, rather than from beverages.  Remember fruits and vegetables provide lots of chewing time. Give it away!  After company leaves, give away leftover food to neighbors, doormen, or delivery people or take it to work the next day. At a buffet?  Eating a little of everything guarantees high calories.  Decide on three or four things, only one of which is high in calories. Save that for last so there less chance of overeating.
